History:
Ukiah was originally a mountain valley agricultural area with dairies, sheep, and cattle. It was a stage stop for travelers on their way south to John Day and Burns for many years. In the early days, lots of gold was transported to the Columbia River at Umatilla for Portland and other large cities. The largest of several lumber mills in the area, Ukiah Lumber Company, was located in the city. The city has a gas station, two convenience stories, a restaurant-tavern, a hotel, and two churches.
