There is generally some snow on the ground from mid-December through the end of January.

Elgin, Oregon:

Elgin is located in the northern part of Union County approximately 20 miles north of LaGrande, OR, the County’s largest town. Elgin and LaGrande are linked by Highway 82. The population of Elgin is roughly 1600. Elgin is situated in Indian Valley and surrounded by timber-covered hills and plateaus. The state highways intersect in the city, Highway 82 and the Weston-Elgin Highway. Highway 82 provides ingress/egress to the west including Umatilla County and Washington.
The economic base of Elgin is concentrated in timber-lumber, along with numerous grain and cattle ranches.

Elgin has typical services found in small communities.  The city provides public water and sewer and also has police and fire protection.  A small medical clinic and an ambulance are available for medical services.  Numerous churches are located in the community.  Recreation includes fishing, hunting and snow skiing at Spout Springs 20 miles west of Elgin.  The city maintains a park that includes a public swimming pool.  

 Education:

Elgin has a good school system with classes starting at kindergarten and running through high school (K-12).
